WHAT CAN YOU EMBROIDER ON?
Q. What can you embroider on?
A. Here are some items that are impossible or just don’t look very good:
- Thick puffy fabric, like a blanket or a beanie: The thread pulls itself tight against the backing, so an extra thick fabric is going to bunch up, pucker, and warp.
- Non-flat items that aren’t hats: We have special machinery to stitch on hats, but otherwise the item must be able to lay flat to go through the machine.
- Thin, see-through, stretchy, or ribbed garments: There are a couple of issues here. First, thin or stretchy fabric will tend to move a lot as it’s stitched, causing warping, misalignment, and poor details. Second, we use a fabric backing to help give the embroidery strength and security, and a thin (especially white) shirt will show the backing through the fabric, which can look like a rough white outline of the design.
- Paper: While stitching paper is possible, it is usually hand-made and our current set up isn’t able to handle it in a production capacity.

Q. What thread colors do you have?
A. We have 35 house colors that are always in stock and always included in the cost of your embroidery. We think they cover a wide range of art. If it’s not vital that your colors are totally exact, we think our house colors will work great for you. If you need an exact color for any reason, we have access to a huge catalog of thread and can get you what you need. It is a $25 fee per custom color. Our house colors:
Q. Do you do puff/3D embroidery?
A. Yes we do! It’s a really cool process that adds a layer of foam between the hat and the thread for a raised look that takes your hats to the next level. It is an extra $0.75 per hat, and there are a few restrictions:
- No small text: Small text isn’t great for any embroidery, but especially with puff. The thread needs enough room to properly stitch around the letters and cut out the foam. The best candidates for puff are large block letters. I really wouldn’t got any less than 40 or 50pt font with block letters. Feel free to ask us if your design is a good candidate.
- No large blocks of color: There are multiple types of stitches needed to embroider a design. Any element that’s wider than about .5 inches needs a fill stitch, where the machine stitches in a pattern to fill a large area Fill stitches are incompatible with puff embroidery because they push down the foam so much that it’s no longer raised off of the hat. If you have a design with big blocks of color and block letters, we can stitch the blocks and then drop 3D text on top of it. Please reach out if you have any questions about 3D embroidery or about setting up your art.
Q. How do I design for embroidery?
A. Simplify, simplify, simplify. Embroidery just can’t recreate the small details of screen printing.
- Avoid small text, thin line work, and intricate shapes.
- Avoid doing text or shape cutouts, where the hat shows through a detailed n cutout of a larger shape.
- Remember that embroidery can’t handle low opacity, gradients, or color mixing.
ART
Q. What type of files should I submit?
A. There are a few different option for file types, depending on if it is a vector file or a raster file.
Vector Files (From Adobe Illustrator or a similar program)
Vector art should come over as a .pdf or an .ai file. Please outline all text and strokes and make sure images are embedded.
Raster Files (From Adobe Photoshop or a similar program)
Raster art can come in many different formats, .psd would be the best case, but a high quality .png or .jpg can also work just fine. The biggest concern with a raster file is that it needs to be at least at 300ppi at the dimensions that you want to print it (600ppi is even better).
If all this technical jargon is confusing, feel free to reach out over email or live chat us, or just send this info to your designer and they should know what to do with it!
Q. Help! I don't have a design!
A. Custom art is not currently built into our order form, so if you need design work send us an email, call us, or live chat us and explain what you’re looking for. For very simple recreations or if you just need something typed out in a nice font we will quote you an amount of time to finish it and bill a clean $1 per minute of work. Anything that needs to be designed from scratch will get a flat $100 fee. We love thinking about that design cost on a per/shirt basis, and usually it works out to less than $1 per shirt to get a really great design that people will want to own and wear all the time.
- The official, final text to be included in the design (make sure there aren’t any typos)
- A description of any general style or concept you have in mind (i like old western designs / make it look like a sports team logo)
- Any logos or design elements that need to be included
- Screenshots, links, or descriptions of any design inspiration to help guide the design.
